Exploring barriers to organ donation in the African American communities of California
There are a disproportionate number of African-Americans on transplant waiting lists across the country. The outcomes of a transplant are greatly improved when the donor and the recipient are from the same ethnic group. Sadly, the demand for cadaver organs in the African-American community exceeds the supply. Researchers in the past have sought to identify barriers to organ and tissue donation. To date, the studies have been conducted in the eastern and southern regions of the United States. This study examines whether the previously identified barriers are applicable in the African-American communities of California. A revised version of the Bone Marrow Donation Intention Tool was administered both in person and online. A t-test was used for analysis. The findings revealed statistically significant agreement/disagreement statements. These statements indicated that the barriers to organ donation from other areas of the United States were not representative of the respondents on the west coast
Microfluidic generation of networked droplet collections and lipid membrane constructs
We report on microfluidic strategies to generate several multi-compartment membrane-based structures, including droplet interface bilayer networks and multi-compartment vesicles. These developments allow the current status quoâ where microdroplets are used as isolated vesselsâ to be changed. By linking droplets together with lipid membranes, higher order systems can be generated, with particular ramifications for bottom-up synthetic biology and for functional droplet-based microreactors and biodevices
Relationship between spin squeezing and single-particle coherence in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with Josephson coupling
We investigate spin squeezing of a two-mode boson system with a Josephson
coupling. An exact relation between the squeezing and the single-particle
coherence at the maximal-squeezing time is discovered, which provides a more
direct way to measure the squeezing by readout the coherence in atomic
interference experiments. We prove explicitly that the strongest squeezing is
along the axis, indicating the appearance of atom number-squeezed state.
Power laws of the strongest squeezing and the optimal coupling with particle

Information Technology Applications in Hospitality and Tourism: A Review of Publications from 2005 to 2007
The tourism and hospitality industries have widely adopted information
technology (IT) to reduce costs, enhance operational efficiency, and most importantly to
improve service quality and customer experience. This article offers a comprehensive review of
articles that were published in 57 tourism and hospitality research journals from 2005 to 2007.
Grouping the findings into the categories of consumers, technologies, and suppliers, the article
sheds light on the evolution of IT applications in the tourism and hospitality industries. The
article demonstrates that IT is increasingly becoming critical for the competitive operations of
the tourism and hospitality organizations as well as for managing the distribution and
marketing of organizations on a global scale
